Although my research focused on playing an instrument, there are many other ways to get involved with arts for mental health benefits. Arts participation refers to the various ways people can engage with the arts, whether as a creator, performer or an audience member. This engagement can take many forms and it is up to you to find your favorite!

Forms of Arts Participation

Active Participation: Creating or performing art such as painting, dancing, acting or playing an instrument!

Passive Participation: Experiencing art as an audience member, such as attending a theater performance, visiting an art gallery or listening to a concert.

Community Based Participation: Engaging in arts activities that are organized within a community, such as public art groups, local theater or community choirs.
