I started singing in my high school’s choir my freshman year and never looked back. Being able to express myself with like-minded and genuine musicians has opened many opportunities and has given me so much joy these past four years. I plan on joining a vocal ensemble when I enroll in University because music is so important in maintaining my mental health.

I started learning how to play instruments in 4th grade when I learned the flute. Ever since then, I have felt inspired to learn more every chance I get. I joined the concert choir and concert band at the high school where I gained more musical knowledge. This motivated me to join the school jazz band, where I learned how to play tenor saxophone. This musical journey has led me to meet some of my closest friends and learn so much more about who I am as a person. Music has allowed me various opportunities such as self expression, self confidence, and a passion to continue to pursue a career in the arts after high school.

I first learned drums when I was a teenager. I picked it up because my friends wanted to start a band and they needed a drummer. I bought a second hand set from a local friend and found a teacher by tearing a phone number off a flyer in a music store. I studied under his guidance for two years and then started just learning on my own.

Being part of a band was one of the best times of my life. We weren’t very good, but we loved every minute of it. We played parties and cookouts just for friends and family and, although it never went any further than that, we felt like real rock stars.

Music has always been part of my identity and whether I am listening or playing, it always will be.

I started playing an instrument in 4th grade, I continued to play all throughout middle school, I got into playing the trumpet as I saw my sister playing it and I wanted to be like her, when she decided to switch instruments I took on playing the trumpet just as she used to. Playing this instrument led me to learning so many new things I never knew before, also allowing me to understand music more and what it means to some people. I am very happy I got this chance as I got to learn a new thing and get closer and meet some friends.

I went to my first concert this past year, it was a life changing experience. I wasn’t too familiar with the music since my friend’s friend bailed last minute and I was just lucky enough to be a fill in to go. I remember listening to the music on the way there and all in school hours before the concert to familiarize myself with their discography. Once I got there I could feel the music, through the building, I remember being given a bracelet and a photo card, plus a little poster to hold up for the group we were seeing. Although the group has since been disbanded, I’ll never forget how it felt to take the first step into such an amazing, interconnected community.

I have never played an instrument. I really wanted to but it just made me frustrated. But listening to music and watching music? Incredible. Just the other day I went to a student run concert at Brown University. The first notes of the violin started a chain reaction of goosebumps across my body. I love listening to Spotify and singing in the shower. I think music is one of humankind’s most beautiful creations and I am forever grateful for musicians who bring confusing black and white dots on paper to life.
